Does herbalism work for anxiety and depression?
I was thinking of trying a herbal rememedy for anxiety, insomnia and depressionh. Does anyone know of any research that shows it works? I really dont want to waste any money if it doesnt.
And can anyone recommend what i should take ?
thanks
Answer:Yes, I take 5htp for depression and anxiety and it works better than the SSRI that the doctor prescribed for me. Been taking it for 3 years now and wouldn't be without it. I suffered from chronic depression before finding this stuff. You can buy it from health food stores or over the 'net from a reputable site. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. I find it's better than St Johns Wort, which has a similiar effect, but does have side effects.
I also take:
Passiflora – for anxiety and to help me sleep
A combined magnesium/calcium supplement – works as a natural relaxant – take last thing at night.
Vitamin B complex – essential for healthy nervous system functioning.
Cut out ALL caffeine – even in tea – this has made a huge difference to me.
Avoid junk food, artificial sweeteners (esp. aspartame) and refined sugars.
L-theanine is very good for acute stress, but don't use it for too long or it can lower brain serotonin and cause some mild depression. If I take it I feel a bit empty and dull, but it's good if you're totally stressing out about something and need an immediate relief.
You could also try some exercise and yoga as well. Exercise can burn off those excess stress hormones in the body and increase the natural endorphins and yoga is just plain relaxing and helps your mind focus on something other than your problems.
Hope you feel better soon.
Answer:What should you take? You should take the time to learn a non-pill way to deal with anxiety and depression.
There will always be people who want to make money off of you. Whether it is a pharmaceutical company, or an herbal remedy, someone is going to get your money.
It is far better to work on mental issues like anxiety with a cognitive approach first. Learn to meditate. Learn to do yoga. Learn deep breathing. These things are going to be far more effective in the long run than some pill. Learn relaxation techniques such as progressive relaxation for insomnia. Do not consume excessive caffeine or alcohol near bedtime, and do not exercise late. Set up a quiet time before bedtime to wind down and get drowsy. Something simple like a cold bath/shower before bed, then getting into a warm bed causes instant drowsiness.
If depression is a concern, maybe some counseling is in order. I would take that approach before just taking a pill or herb.
Yoga and meditation have helped people for thousands of years to gain calm, relieve anxiety, relax, and find their center. Try them. They could be really helpful. And other than a small investment in a class or book to get you started, you're not feeding money into some company that just wants to sell you their product.
Answer:Hi Sunnyday: Yes it certainly does. I use a brand called Panicyl that works great for me. I have a history of depression and anxiety and after suffering for years off and on antidepressants I finally learned that the drugs were half the problem. Good luck Sunnyday!
Answer:All herbs act purely through the placebo effect. While this might be useful for you, it would be better if you addressed the root cause of your problems.
Answer:Omega 3s and daily vitamins are simple and proven to work. Black tea relieves stress, and exercise might help you sleep at night. Don't drink caffeine either. I also second that st johns wort.
Answer:I Conjure Candles do visualisation pure essential oil candles that can help you if you don't want to take anything internally. Kate moss is a big fan.
Answer:Herbalism does work! You need herbs that clear the liver and calm the mind.
